the age of jane and john add up to 25years.8years ago jane was twice as old as john.how old are they now?

We physicists have trouble with this sort of thing.

ja + jo = 25

(ja - 8) = 2 (jo-8)
----------------------
well then

ja = (25-jo)
so
(25 - jo - 8) = 2 jo - 16

17 - jo = 2 jo -16

3 jo = 33

jo = 11
I guess ja = 25-11 = 14 then
