Okay your structure is great, and your concept is great, overall you are on the right track! However, when you say "how often have we heard someone mention these things" it sounds like you are only talking about that one specific phrase (the quote) maybe say something around the lines of "How often do you here people saying these types of things about others" (spiff that up a bit)
Do you understand?

like so
“That person must belong to a gang; just look how he dresses”. How often do you here people saying these types of things about others, yet, how often have we said something similar? I believe our society is based on the superficial things, which we categorize people because of the actions of a small percentage.

Okay. LOL. Put it this way.
YOURS:“That person must belong to a gang; just look how he dresses”. How often have we heard somebody mention these things
This sounds like you are only talking about one specific thing. It sounds like your saying that we only here people saying the phrase “That person must belong to a gang; just look how he dresses”
MINE:"How often do you here people saying these types of things about others"
Notice I said TYPES, which makes it a general idea of what people might say. I am not signaling one thing out, but talking about EVERYTHING that is similar to the quote that people say
Does THAT make sense????
