In 1979 the auction house Sotheby's sold Frederic Church's "Icebergs," making it the first American painting to sell for more than $1 million. (It made $2.5 million.)

Other American artists who have since had paintings sold for more than that are Jackson Pollock, Winslow Homer and Mary Cassatt.
