well, what is the total length of the pieces?
4 3/4 + 1 5/6 + 2 2/3
= 4+1+2 + 9/12 + 10/12 + 8/12
= 7 + 27/12
= 7 + 2 3/12
= 9 1/4 ft

4 3/4 + 1 5/6 + 2 2/3
= 4+1+2 + 9/12 + 10/12 + 8/12
= 7 + 27/12
= 7 + 2 3/12
= 9 1/4 ft

What about part b: Later, the carpenter needs to go back to the lumber store for more lumber. He will cut 3 more pieces the same size as 9 3/12ft. In addition, he will cut a piece that is 3 3/4 feet long. The carpenter thinks he needs a 12-foot piece of lumber. Do you agree or disagree?
