Ava's bedroom rug is 2 3/4 feet long and 2 1/2 feet wide. What is the area of the rug?
How do I go about figuring out the answer to the above? It seems to be very extremely complicated.

area is length times width, so it is
(2 3/4)(2 1/2) = (11/4)(5/2) = 55/8 = 6 7/8 ft^2
(2 3/4)(2 1/2) = (11/4)(5/2) = 55/8 = 6 7/8 ft^2

I am sorry but this is confusing and you have me more confused. Can you explain how to multiply 2 3/4 x 2 1/2 in order to figure out (11/4)(5/2) and the rest of what you stated?

well, it is hard to multiply mixed numbers, so change them to fractions.
2 3/4 = 2 + 3/4 = 8/4 + 3/4 = 11/4
See other post on multiplying fractions. I can't believe this isn't explained in your text, with examples.
For more examples, remember: google is your friend. You'll find lots of explanations, many of them much more complete than you will get here.
