Usually, people have 2 legs and dogs have 4.
39(2) + 4X = 124
78 + 4X = 124
4X = 46
X = 11.5
If your data are correct, there must have been one two-legged dog or a dog with six legs. (Maybe there might have been two dogs with 5 legs each! Another possibility is that two of the people were amputees!) Check your original numbers.
I hope this helps. Thanks for asking.
