There were no term limits for presidents when I started voting. That was after George Washington rode off into the sunset.
He did start a tradition of term limits, but there was no law and in fact FDR served more than two before and during WW2.

First, YRN DJ, how many terms did Washington serve, one, two, or three? And note that there were no limits on terms a president could serve until the 22nd amendment was adopted. What precedent did Washington set that was informally followed before FDR and the 22nd amendment?

It's worth noting that Grover Cleveland ran three times but was elected twice. He was elected, then defeated, then ran a third time and was elected again. FDR's cousin Theodore ran for a third term in 1912 on a third-party ticket, but was defeated. Did any other president EVER serve more than two terms BEFORE FDR was elected to his third term in 1940 and his fourth term in 1944?
