4) Starting in New England and working your way south, describe how each region saw settlers coming for different reasons. Give at least two specific examples for each region to support your answers.

My Answer~~
The Puritans and the Pilgrims left England because they were being harassed. The Pilgrims wanted religious freedom, and the Puritans wanted to purify the Church of England; both groups came to the New World and created the New England colony. The Puritans had very strict laws, so there was not any freedom for religion. The Pilgrims on the other hand though were a little more accepting of different religions. For the people who wanted more religious freedom they moved further south. The Middle Colonies were founded for religious freedom and farming. The Middle Colonies were very accepting of religious freedom, they had many religions like, Quaker, Catholic, and Jewish religions were accepted in the Middle Colonies. The Southern Colonies were founded for farming, trading with England, and also for religious freedom.

You did an excellent job in describing how religion as motivating factor for coming to a region lessened as you moved further south. But there were other things to consider when deciding on a region to settle in the new world.

Think of it this way if you were in England and you decided to take off across the ocean you would want to make sure you picked a place to settle that met your needs. If you were a tradesman where might you go? If you were a farmer where might you go? If you were comfortable with owning slaves and trading where might you go? If you wanted to live in a big city where might you go? These are all things to consider.

Your teacher is right. The Dutch in New Amsterdam were interested more in trade than religion. The southern colonies were more interested in agriculture than religion. You are right, though, that some colonies were more tolerant of religious diversity than others. Note, however, that Pennsylvania, while tolerant of other religions, was founded by Quakers and Penn actively recruited Quakers for settlement in Pennsylvania. Lord Baltimore established Maryland for Catholics. South Carolina tolerated every religion, except for a two-year period that was quickly abandoned. They were more interested in growing rice! Virginia was interested in growing tobacco for the English market.
