Explain how you can use a straightedge and a compass to construct an angle that is both congruent and adjacent to a given angle.

Answered by Cassie
I think the answer is that you use the straightedge to draw two parallel lines and then you draw a line that goes through them that is perpendicular. You then use the compass to measure the angles, they should be congruent and adjacent. Any help would be appreciated.

use the edge to construct an arbitrary angle, with vertex at O.

Mark an arc through the sides of the angle. Let the arc intersect the rays at A and B. Continue the arc on past B for a distance.

Set the compass at B, and to the width of AB.

Still with the compass at B, mark an arc to intersect the first arc at C.

Now you have AB = BC.

Since the radius OA=OB=OC, angles AOB and BOC are congruent.

Use the compass and the stright edge to see what the other angle is then make a complementary and adjacent angle to it

So... did any of you graduate yet?

first, you need to draw two intersecting lines, while you are using a straightedge. The lines can form an angle. the label of a vertex shows how an angle has the point O. so you will set the compass to a convenient radius and with the point O which is your center, you can draw a circle

Yikes! Teacher for one the schools you all are here to cheat at rather than genuinely learn. I'm truly sympathetic and heartache-y for the volume of low feelings expressed. I also want you to know that after years of teaching this course I recognize each of the listed answers above as having been floating around a long time and ripped from elsewhere on the internet. Even the people answering here are just plagarizing from someone else. It is more obvious than you think. If you are looking somewhere for answers - try your eTextbook. Page 44 of your textbook, linked in your lessons, gives the steps for constructing congruent angles, which you can read and look over a few times to get the general process. If you want to make it congruent AND adjacent, you'd just start the congruent angle construction on one ray of the existing angle rather than a new spot on the paper.
