"President Lincoln’s Declaration of Emancipation, January 1, 1863"
by Frances E. W. Harper

1 It shall flash through coming ages,
2 It shall light the distant years;
3 And eyes now dim with sorrow
4 Shall be brighter through their tears.

5 It shall flush the mountain ranges,
6 And the valleys shall grow bright;
7 It shall bathe the hills in radiance,
8 And crown their brows with light.

9 It shall flood with golden splendor
10 All the huts of Caroline;
11 And the sun-kissed brow of labor
12 With lustre new shall shine.

13 It shall gild the gloomy prison,
14 Darkened by the nation's crime,
15 Where the dumb and patient millions
16 Wait the better-coming time.

17 By the light that gilds their prison
18 They shall see its mouldering key;
19 And the bolts and bars shall vibrate
20 With the triumphs of the free.

21 Though the morning seemed to linger
22 O'er the hill-tops far away,
23 Now the shadows bear the promise
24 Of the quickly coming day.

25 Soon the mists and murky shadows
26 Shall be fringed with crimson light,
27 And the glorious dawn of freedom
28 Break refulgent on the sight.

Amber, put your subject matter in the question. "check my answers" is not a school subject as I recall my school days.
Answered by Amber
I'm sorry I'll do that next time and thanks :)
Answered by Writeacher
Lines 10 & 12 are not in the first stanza. Do you know what a stanza is, Amber?
Answered by Amber
So I'm incorrect? And stanza is the lines in the poem?!?!?
Answered by Ms. Sue
In this poem, if a stanza is four lines, then no right answers are shown for number 1.

Answered by Writeacher
This poem has 7 stanzas. Do you see them?
Answered by Writeacher
And Ms. Sue is right. There is no correct answer for #1 as it's written.
Answered by Amber
My teacher needs a answer though what should I put?
Answered by Reed
Amber, I noted the same thing. The question is worded incorrectly. Lines 10 and 12 do rhyme, but they are in the third stanza.
Answered by Writeacher
You should point this out to your teacher. You shouldn't be penalized because someone wrote the question wrong.
Answered by Amber
That is how my teacher has my question written and I didn't think it was written correctly either so I just chose the best answer.
Answered by Reed
And, I'm going to add another comment, which pertains to the poem, not your answers. The questions we get about the "literal" interpretation of the lines about the rising sun and shadows seem to concentrate on the shadows. My reading of the poem is that Ms. Harper intended us to concentrate on the growing light as the sun rises and shortens the shadows, not on the shadows themselves. Throughout the poem she emphasizes light in dark places, using the metaphor of light to describe the Proclamation.
Answered by Reed
As to your answer, you did the best thing in choosing the best answer.
Answered by Amber
Thanks so much reed :)
Answered by Ms. Sue
In your original post, weren't Line 2 and 4 among the answer choices for number 1?

Answered by Reed
You're very welcome, Amber. And you learned something about poetic form (stanzas or verses) today, too! :)
Answered by Amber
Yes it helped me a lot :)
Answered by Writeacher
I agree with Ms. Sue. Whenever I've seen this question before, lines 2 and 4 were always among the answer choices.

Out of all of the works I have visited just to check my answers to everyone I can't tell who is right. Yet, but I will go over my answers one or two more times to be sure my answers don't fail me and I will be back to explain each one. Although everyone's questions are different it may help you because I am going to explain it and most probably say my answer. It is up to you if you want to believe my answers but never purposely fail you guys which is why I am putting the answers fully out instead of just the letters and moving on. Be back between 30 minutes to an hour.

“I’m trying to help” ... what are the correct answers ?
Answered by Lady Unsane
1. B lines 2 and 4
2. B light eliminating from shadows
3. D it uses comparison with sunlight...
4. A it will make mountains and valleys bright...
5. A gloomy
6. (Evidence from the 3rd and 4th stanzas) To gild something is to coat it with gold. Gild means to "cover thinly" with gold as in barely gold. Light shining on something has nothing to with gold leaf or gold plate, but it Makes it shine LIKE gold. The connotation differs from the denotation because it contributes to a warm hopeful tone. The use of imagery is basically the author using very descriptive words to emphasize their work.(Third stanza 9-10) "It shall flood with golden splendor/ All the huts of Coraline..." is imagery because it describes the scene in vivid detail. The phrase "golden splendor" rouses am excited tone.
7. D expressing unhappiness
8. B restatement
9. D line 31
10. B The river becomes calmer at this point.
11. C line 16
12. D The river is moving quickly and becomes rough.
13. A The river gets faster...
14. B hearing
15. A charge
16. A the rain looked shiny under the streetlight.
17. B The winners of the contest are they.
18. A My Sister Sarah loves to cook.
19. C Even my cousin Steve feels sad today.

Theses are my answers. The multi choice ones should be correct as of March 3 2020 unless my answers aren't on your test.

The written response is what i put in on my test, so therefore i am not responsible if you have a very strict teacher that only gives you 2 points cuz she wanted you to "elaborate more". This answer has answered hopefully all parts of the test. If you wanted to, you can expand further on my answer.
