I haven't lived in Canada, but some people refer to the U.S. has a melting pot where various people come together and share customs. In Canada, it is said, the various ethnic groups are like a mosaic. They all work together, but each retains its own distinctive characteristics.
Good observation, Ms.Sue. I can think of other ways ethnic groups are similar and dissimilar in the two countries, but don't know what the course materials are saying. They may be making quite a different point.
