The so-called "Critical Period" in American History can be viewed as historian John Fiske said; as "the most critical time in all American history... including the Civil War": or, may be viewed as a period of transition and some accomplishment. To what extent are these statements true.

The Critical Period was from 1783 to 1789, shortly after the U.S. achieved its independence. By including the Civil War, you have the period from 1783 to 1865.

I know when making a cake the most critical time is mixing the right ingredients. How does this apply to the period 1783-1789? Have you read any of Fiskes arguments?
