Um, your text book or teacher's explanations should have told you what these various literary devices are. If you were asleep or not paying attention, you wouldn't know. Look up the words alliteration, etc. and find out what they mean. In this case the old man's hat has been with him and seen all the good and bad things that have happened in his life. The hat, of course, is not human, but has "seen" all of the man's life, from the birth of a son to a fire to the death of an adored woman, etc. When you give human "powers" as vision to an inanimate object like a hat, what is that called?
