Scooby, it looks to me like you have a good handle on how you learn best...
I always had the most success with the hands on techniques...Projects for building something that demonstrated a principal... like building a 3 faced representation of the Capital, White House and Supreme Court that would balance on a stick labeled People. The kids loved that project and they had to make a presentation as to why it was true. The students learned the concept and could apply it to real life. ( They also had to demonstrate what would happen if the "building" got out of balance). I think you have the idea....
