You're using punishment to get rid of a particular behavior. You should keep using the same punishment for three to five tries

Thank you for using the Jiskha Homework Help Forum. It is best to NOT use negativity to train a dog. Reward works much better. Try to ignore the bad behaviour, if you can, and focus on what is good.

Punishment only temporarily suppresses an unwanted response. As SraJMcGin indicates, it is much better to reinforce desired behavior.

The same principle works with humans. Try to catch them "being good," so you can reinforce that behavior. The reinforcement does not necessarily need to be food or monetary. Sincere praise or a "thank you" — with or without a soft touch (petting for dogs) — can be as effective, sometimes more effective.

I hope this helps a little more. Thanks for asking.
