gram molecule
In fact when I was in freshman chemistry I was taught gram molecular weight and not molar mass. Gram molecular weight was defined as the weight of one grams molecule; i.e., 1 mole.
In another part of the "history lesson" we were taught that 1 gram atomic weight was the weight of 1 grams atom; now also called a mole but a mole of atoms instead of a mole of molecules. Currently we can have a mole of molecules, a mole of atoms, a mole of electrons, a mole of fish, a mole of moles, etc. A mole now is 6.022E23 of anything.
