During WWII we couldn't be many consumer items, such as cars and washing machines. Some food items were rationed. After the war, though, people flocked to buy previously unavailable items. Construction of new homes resumed and many former GIs became new home owners.
We fought in WWI for about a year and a half, while we we fought in WWII for about three and a half years.
The GI Bill providing college educations for veterans was probably one of the most important effects of WWII.
