17/20 = s/740

20s = 12,580

s = 629

629 students

divide the 740 into 20 equal parts of x each. There are thus

17x students and 3x faculty. So,

17x+3x=740
20x=740
x=37

So, there are

17*37 = 629 students
3*37 = 111 faculty

Another way: when a ratio such as 17:3 , that means for each 20, 3 are faculty.

faculty = 3/20 x 740= 111

Think about division and what you did in class.
you have 740
