    This makes absolutely no sense to me, certainly not as a math problem. It makes no sense to me as an electrical engineer, either.

    I suppose we could do this ....
12V = 3W
V = 3W/12 = W/4
then 2W - 8V
= 2W - 8(W/4)
= 2W - 2W
= 0
    
12V = 3W
V = 3W/12 = W/4
then 2W - 8V
= 2W - 8(W/4)
= 2W - 2W
= 0
