Sven is thinking of two numbers. The sum is 12. The difference is 4. What are the two numbers?

x + y = 12
x - y = 4

Usually, you could use substitution to solve, but it would be easier just to add the two equations together and...

2x = 16
x = 8

And if x is 8, then....

y = 4

There for the two numbers are 8 and 4.
