Trying very hard to visualize a triangle that has a "top length" and a "lower length".

Are you sure that there was no angle given, or perhaps the area was given?

no joy, mia. Take two sticks of those lengths, and lay them side by side, with one end flush. Now start separating the other ends. You can easily see that any of the lengths 3,4,5,6 is possible, depending on how widely you open the angle.
