well first a typical common denominator example
find a common denominator to compare
1/3 and 2/5
the denominator will have to have a 3 in it and a five in it
In this simple case 3*5 = 15 will work
Now find something over 15 that is the same as 1/3
multiply top and bottom by five
(1*5) /(3*5) = 5/15
Now work on 2/5
multiply top and bottom by 3
(2*3) / (5*3) = 6/15
Now if I wanted to add 1/3 + 2/5
I could add their equivalents with the common denominator of 15
1/3 + 2/5 = 5/15 + 6/15 = 11/15
