    x^2 + x = -c
x^2 + x + 1/4 = 1/4-c
(x+1/2)^2 = (1-4c)/4
x+1/2 = ± √(1-4c)/2
x = -1/2 ± √(1-4c)
= (-1 ± √(1-4c) )/2
-keep only the x^2 and x terms on the left
- take half of the coefficient of the x term, then square it
- add that result to both sides.
You will have a perfect square on the left side
