Actually, it was important to the United States as part of the concept of "manifest destiny". The idea was to "square off" U.S. territory from coast to coast, the Atlantic to the Pacific. Oregon was disputed between the United States and Great Britain, whether it would be part of Canada or the United States. We wanted it. Period.
