1. The dollar sign would go in front of the number = I bought a $50 shirt and $5 socks. (or a Pair of $5 socks.

2. close the space after the 2nd hyphen = and 5-dollar socks OR and a pair of 5-dollar socks. The small number 5 is more apt to be spelled out, rather than using the number.
