If I understand what you were to do, you were to look at the Present Tense and give the Preterit.
2. costar is the infinitive and it IS stem-changing in the Present Tense (o--->ue) but NOT in the Preterit = costé
4. same thing with this one. acostarse changes in the Present o--->ue but NOT in the Preterit. me acosté
EASY RULE: In the Preterit, no stem change (e--->ie) (o--->ue) for any -ar or -er infinitive. However, when you get to -ir verbs, you might have a SINGLE vowel change (e--->i) (o--->u).
There IS a reason and it has to do with pronunciation. Let's take #2. costar. In the Present tense, if you don't change the vowel, you get an UGLY sound "COS-to"and it's more "Musical" as "CUES-to". In the Preterit, if you DO change the vowel "CUES-té" there is way too much stress on the first vowel, and because of the accent mark, you want to hear the 2nd vowel. "cos-Té" allows that.
Not wishing to confuse you, just feel free to ask any question about what you do not understand!
