So, I do not think Hitler was wise in canceling the attempted invasion. If anything, it was a poor move on his part.

Ms. Sue may be occupied elsewhere. bobpursley is correct, and so are you, as far as you go. For both 1 and 2, FDR realized that if Britain fell to the Germans, the United States would be left with no ally in Europe at all. He also knew, as Churchill had convinced him, that Britain could not stand alone without U.S. help. FDR also realized a bond between the U.S. and the U.K. as culturally similar, England being the "Mother Country", etc.
I agree with bobpursley that Hitler's invasion of Russia first was a fatal mistake on his part. I'm not really sure what Dunkirk had to do with it. Dunkirk was on the European continent, so Hitler's taking of that city had nothing to do with the invasion he planned. The evacuation of British troops did enable the U.K. to maintain its army, which would have been basically defeated if it had been captured at Dunkirk, so it had a role in that sense when it came to Hitler's planned invasion of the British isles.
