That would be because they missed the 2 in the denominator for their: c = (10-x)+1.4sqrt(x^2+36) dc/dx = -1 + 1.4x/sqrt(x^2+36) it should actually be: dc/dx = -1 + 1.4/2*sqrt(x^2+36)
