multiply each term by 3, and solve for y. 3y + 3(5/3) = 3x + 6 3y = 3x + 6 - 5 3y = 3x + 1 3y/3 = 3x/3 + 1/3 y= x + 1/3

Well, work= force x displacement (as you stated) but if he lifts his pencil 20 cm, then lowers it back down to 20 cm, his displacement= 0 therefore, he did 0 joules of work
