1. You first need to find how many cm in an inch by going to a conversion chart or manipulating how many inches in a meter. It is much easier to go to a conversion chart. i.e, 1-inch = ?? cm. (Be sure you are going in the right direction. In other words you do NOT want to find the cm to English and multiply by the English: 1 cm = 0.394) (Be sure you are going from inches to cm; you should be able to find on a conversion table. 1 inch = 2.540 cm.
2. You all ready know how many inches you must convert. Do the multiplcation. (Remember, since metric is in decimal, convert your English fraction to a decimal before you multiply.) To convert a fraction, divide the numerator by the denominator or just know what 1/2 is of a dollar. 1/2 is 1 divided by 2 and add to your 3 = 3.5 inches.
3. Now you are ready to do your conversion by multiplying.
4. Since this is a small measurement, after you do your math, I would go find a ruler or measuring tape that has inches on one edge and cm on the other edge, to see if your answer compares closely.
4. If you went in the wrong direction, the figure found will be much smaller than the 3-1/2 inches. Since cm are tiny and take more to fill an inch, your final number should be a number larger than the 3-1/2.
