I just dont understand this I know that
ytterbium has the electron configuration:
1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 4s2 3d10 4p6 5s2 4d10 5p6 6s2 4f14
but I dont know anything else apart from that so I dont understand what Bob means by outer or anything about the shells or orbitals. Please help.
I know Kr has 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 4s2 3d10 4p6 so that means
[Kr] 5s2 4d10 5p6 6s2 4f14 is ytterbium elsectron configuration dont know anything else to do with this question please help
Ytterbium, atomic number 70, is the first element in the Periodic table to have the first four shells full.
a) State the number of electrons in the fourth shell/ level of ytterbium (1)
b)How many orbitals are there in the third shell of ytterbium? (1)
Please help I'm very confused

You have to go to the basics here. Do the electron configuration. The outer in Y is 5s25d1, before that {Kr}. So how many electrons in Kr?

a. You are in trouble. You dont know what outer means? You dont know what 4th means?
State the number of electrons in the fourth shell/ level of ytterbium (1) 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 4s2 3d10 4p6 5s2 4d10 5p6 6s2 4f14 count them: 2+6+10+14
How many orbitals are there in the third shell of ytterbium? (1)
you have 3s, 3p, and 3d. 18, in three orbital shapes.
