Lesson Plan: Yes/No Questions and Question Words (Grade 2)
Objective:
- Students will learn to ask and answer yes/no questions and questions using question words.
Materials needed:
- Whiteboard or chart paper
- Whiteboard markers or markers
- Yes/no question cards
- Question word cards
- Classroom objects or pictures of objects
Warm-up (5 minutes):
1. Begin the lesson by briefly reviewing what a question is and how to answer them. Give examples of simple questions and their corresponding answers (e.g., "Do you like ice cream?" Yes/No. "Is today Monday?" Yes/No).
Introduction (10 minutes):
1. Write the words "yes" and "no" on the whiteboard. Explain that these words are used to answer questions.
2. Introduce yes/no questions by giving examples and eliciting answers from the students. For example, ask, "Do you like pizza?" and have students respond with "yes" or "no."
3. Show the students some Yes/No question cards. Have them take turns reading the questions and answering with "yes" or "no."
Guided Practice (15 minutes):
1. Write some question words (e.g., what, where, who, why) on the whiteboard or chart paper. Explain that these words are used to ask more specific questions.
2. Show the students some question word cards. Have them take turns reading the question words and providing examples of questions using each word.
3. Introduce and practice asking questions using question words. For example, ask, "Where is the book?" and have students respond with a location ("On the shelf").
4. Show the students some classroom objects or pictures of objects. Have them take turns asking questions using question words to guess what object you are describing. For example, "What is big and green?" (A tree).
Independent Practice (15 minutes):
1. Divide the students into pairs.
2. Give each pair a set of yes/no question cards and question word cards.
3. Have the students take turns asking and answering questions using the cards.
4. Circulate the room and provide support as needed.
Closure (5 minutes):
1. Review the concepts covered in the lesson by asking the students a few yes/no questions and questions using question words.
2. Summarize the importance of asking and answering questions to gain information and communicate with others.
Extension activity:
- Have students create their own yes/no question cards and question word cards. They can use these to play a game of "Question Card Match-Up" with a partner or small group.
Assessment:
- Throughout the lesson, observe the students' participation and understanding of asking and answering yes/no questions and questions using question words. Provide feedback and support as needed.
