yes i meant (2x+1)/5 and therefore that is h ow i got -3/5, finding it hard to follow Marth's working now since it is a completely different set of working.

Multiply eq 2 by 2
4a+2b=2
Eliminate b by subtracting eq (1) from (3)
4a+2b=1
3a-2b=12
a= -11
