The purpose of the Albany Plan of Union was to create a unified government for the Thirteen Colonies in North America, mainly for collective defense and cooperation against common threats, such as the French during the French and Indian War. It was proposed by Benjamin Franklin in 1754.

The plan ultimately failed because the colonies were reluctant to relinquish their individual autonomy and powers to a central authority. Moreover, the British government didn't support the plan as it could potentially create a powerful colonial entity that might challenge their control.
