Reflective Review of Argument Writing Unit
One topic I enjoy arguing about is whether school uniforms should be mandatory. I think it’s interesting because there are strong opinions on both sides. A difficulty I have with writing arguments is making sure my reasons and evidence are really clear and easy to understand. When I need to write an argument, the first thing I do is think about my main claim, and I try to come up with reasons to support it. I like to find and acknowledge claims that oppose my claims because it makes my argument stronger when I can explain why those opposing views are not as valid. I find it challenging to find credible sources for arguments because there’s so much information online, and it can be hard to know which sources are trustworthy. The easiest way for me to organize my reasons and evidence is by using a graphic organizer that helps me see everything laid out. I create cohesion in my arguments by using transition words and phrases, so my ideas connect smoothly. One thing I still don’t understand about writing an argument is how to make my conclusion really powerful. I think the best way to write a conclusion to an argument is to restate my main points and leave the reader with something to think about.
Study Tips: I need to go back and review the topic of finding credible sources because I struggled with it the most. I'll read examples of arguments to learn how authors present their claims and reasons. Also, I plan to practice organizing my claims and reasons using a graphic organizer, which usually helps me clarify my thoughts. Watching political speeches might also help me see how arguments are formed and supported. Overall, I’m excited to improve my argument writing skills!
