Agroforestry is a sustainable land management practice that integrates trees and shrubs into agricultural systems, providing numerous environmental, social, and economic benefits. This study assessed the rate of agroforestry adoption in the Karama sector, aiming to understand the factors influencing farmers' decisions to implement agroforestry practices.
Through a combination of surveys, interviews, and field observations, data was collected on the extent of agroforestry adoption, the types of practices being implemented, and the perceived benefits and barriers to adoption. The results revealed that while some farmers in the Karama sector had embraced agroforestry, the overall rate of adoption was relatively low.
Key factors influencing farmers' decisions to adopt agroforestry included access to technical support, availability of resources, knowledge of agroforestry practices, and perceived benefits such as increased crop yield, soil fertility, and biodiversity. Barriers to adoption included limited access to tree saplings, lack of awareness about agroforestry, and competing land uses.
The findings of this study highlight the importance of addressing these barriers and providing targeted support to promote agroforestry adoption in the Karama sector. By increasing awareness, providing technical assistance, and ensuring access to resources, farmers can be encouraged to embrace agroforestry practices, leading to improved livelihoods and environmental sustainability in the region.
