Over the past semester, I have experienced significant personal and professional growth that has profoundly shaped my academic journey. In my communication and presentation skills, I have transformed from a hesitant speaker to a more confident and articulate communicator. Through numerous class presentations and group projects, I learned to structure my thoughts more effectively.
With being in this class I am able to work with people a lot more than I usually would and it was definitely a struggle at first but it's also taught me a lot. Working collaboratively with peers and mentors in these lab settings has taught me critical professional skills such as teamwork, problem-solving, and scientific rigor. Each experiment and research project has incrementally built my confidence and prepared me for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. I have learned throughout this class the importance of respect, not just in communicating with a client, but with my classmates or anyone who disagrees. Even when one disagrees and gets completely out of hand, respect should be maintained in tone and professionalism. It makes for easier discussion, more positive and constructive, and invites openness to each other's point of view and compromise. By listening to what others have to say, even when their views run counter to my own, I am able to navigate such interactions with grace and empathy. In this way, I show not only my respect for the person but also further my ability to relate to others on a deeper level, thus opening the door to mutual understanding and possible compromise.
I also learned discipline, which happened to be a life-changing activity for me. I always rushed through my assignments, spending weeks in advance to write schoolwork. I would always believe that the earlier I completed, the better for my preparations of coming assessments; however, this led to mental and physical burnout characterized by juggling several concurrent activities. Well, I have now realized it's all about pacing and doing it in a slower manner. For the first time, instead of the usual superficial reading to catch up with deadlines, my change in attitude has provided a real desire to understand the material much better. I learned that breaking my study sessions into chunks helps not only to bear the workload but also promotes better retention of information. I have also learned new learning methods that are much more helpful for my long-term learning of the subjects I am studying. For example, I have included active learning techniques: summarizing what I have learned in my own words, teaching others, and using visual aids such as mind maps. These techniques not only enhance my ability to remember information but also allow me to connect with what I am learning on a deeper level.
