At the beginning of the story, "The Interlopers" refers to the two men, Ulrich and Georg, who trespass on each other's land and are seen as intruders in each other's territory. However, as the story progresses and they find themselves trapped under a fallen tree, the title begins to symbolize how they are intruding on the domain of nature, which ultimately proves to be the true interloper by deciding their fate. By the end of the story, "The Interlopers" takes on a more ironic and sinister tone as it becomes clear that nature itself is the ultimate interloper in the conflict between Ulrich and Georg.
