The name "Hoovervilles" was meant to mock President Herbert Hoover for his perceived failure to effectively address the homelessness and poverty caused by the Great Depression. Hoovervilles were makeshift communities of shacks and shanties that were inhabited by those who had lost their homes and jobs during the economic crisis of the 1930s.
