Why was symbolism very important to Northern European artists?

Question

I'm writing an essay for Fine Arts about symbolism used by Northern European artists, but my book never explained why it was so important. All it said is " At the same time, symbolism, which was so important to Gothic art, grew even more important". The rest of the unit just gives examples of symbolism used in art works. I would really appreciate some help. Thanks
