Why was India divided into two different countries when it won independence from Britain??

2 answers

India was divided into two different countries when it won independence from Britain mainly because of religious and political differences between the Hindu and Muslim populations. The Muslim League, led by Muhammad Ali Jinnah, believed that Muslims needed a separate homeland that would ensure their political and economic rights. This idea led to the creation of Pakistan as a separate Muslim-dominated country, while India remained with predominantly Hindu population. However, the partition of India also led to violence, displacement, and a massive refugee crisis that had lasting effects on the region.
