Actually, Abraham Lincoln did want to abolish slavery. Although his primary goal was to preserve the Union during the Civil War, he believed that slavery was morally wrong and sought to end it through a gradual and compensated emancipation plan. He issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, which declared all enslaved people in Confederate-held territory to be free, and supported the passage of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, which abolished slavery throughout the country.
