Why is it that an electrochemical cell(galvanic cell) cannot operate forever?

1 answer

The cathode has a metal dipping into a solution; the anode has a metal dipping into a solution (or electrodes of some kind, not necessarily metals, and a solution or a paste in the case of dry cells). Eventually the electrode is completely dissolved OR the electrolyte is completely used up.
