Why is a blimp less dense than the surrounding in air?

The blimp is filled with a gas less dense than air; i.e., usually helium. Hydrogen is even less dense than helium but there is a fire hazard with hydrogen. Read about the Hindenburg disaster if you want to follow up on that.
