Hot air rises from pavement on a hot summer day primarily due to convection.
When the pavement heats up, it warms the air directly above it. As this air warms, it becomes less dense and rises, allowing cooler air to move in from the sides to take its place. This movement of air due to temperature differences is what we call convection.
