Good marketing by Microsoft? Not only to buyers but to manufacturers, too (such as Dell, Vaio, HP, IBM, etc.)

Windows has had a virtual monopoly on personal computers for years. As software manufacturers gain more profit by making programs with the largest user base, most programs are designed with Windows in mind. The cycle perpetuates itself as many users buy Windows to have easy access to the software they want.

Marth is right. I'd love to have a Mac, but those computers are more expensive than PCs AND I'd have to replace all the software I currently use (Office, Quicken, etc.)

I am sitting right now in front of my old outdated-PC typing this while my brand new Mac is playing Schubert's Trio No 2 beside me, using the Mac's wonderful I-programs.

You are all right, I have many programs on my PC, some home-made, which do not work on the Mac, and vice versa.

I think the close association between IBM and Microsoft helped both tremendously.
