The Zoot Suit Riots of 43 took place in Los Angeles because white servicemen resented seeing so many Latinos socializing in clothing many considered unpatriotic and extravagant in wartime.

I did a google search using
1943 riots Detroit and LA and got several great sources for you to use. It explains that problems started in LA and then Detroit had similar issues caused by race.
