Why did many progressives of both major parties saw American entry into World War I as a peerless opportunity?

Many Progressives during the First World War, Republican and Democrat alike, realized something of great importance to furthering their goals: they saw that the requirements of war on such a large scale would necessitate exponential growth in regulatory government. They weren’t wrong, either. France and Britain both had had to strictly control industries essential to the war effort – like factories and farms – once the War began, and the United States needed the same control of national resources to be effective in the war effort. So, the United States government took over the economy. Progressives were able to make changes in labor, business, and more that had been considered too drastic previously, during times of relative peace.
