why did germany not want to pay for all the damage they done in ww1?

Please help me as i have to write a newspaper report on it.

Germany was defeated, physically devastated, and broke. In addition, the Versailles Treaty demanded that Germany take full responsibility for the start of the war. Germans considered this to be wrong and an insult to their honor.
