The first president of Nigeria was Nnamdi Azikiwe. He served as president from 1963 to 1966, after Nigeria became a republic. Prior to that, he was the Governor-General of Nigeria from 1960 to 1963, when Nigeria transitioned from a dominion to a republic within the Commonwealth.
